So what is the point system?
The point system allows you to branch/create different paths in your story, so that way a reader's decisions affect the outcome of the story. From my personal opinion this is an easier way to branch. (It's always a good idea to use a combination of gains and points to branch, but it is possible just to use points in order to branch.) Before we get started, I would suggest looking at our quick Instagram post tip in order to gain an idea on what points are and how to use them. How to use points? Let's set up our story. Jazzy (our MC) is in love with two people, Jack and Drake. She is also best friends with Hadley. HADLEY (talk_excited) I am so happy. The concert will be lit! JAZZY (talk_awkward) I forgot to tell you...both Jack and Drake asked me out on a date... HADLEY (talk_excited) Seriously? Who do you like better? choice "Jack"{ JAZZY (talk_flirt) Jack is so dreamy. @HADLEY is laugh_giggle @JACK +1 } "Drake"{ JAZZY (talk_flirt) Drake is so dreamy. @HADLEY is laugh_giggle @DRAKE +1 } "I don't like them"{ JAZZY (talk_repulsed) I don't like them. I just felt bad for them. @HADLEY is startled_surprised @DRAKE -5 @JACK -5 } In the both situation, you are simply taking away or adding points. The reason I used the love interests to add points to is that, the MC (JAZZY) has multiple love interests, so we can't simply add points to just her. If we did that the points will rack up for both Jack and Drake. Now how do you use it to branch? Let's say that Jazzy needs to have at least 15 points with either Jack or Drake in order to go on date with them. If she has less than 15 points, she is spending the night at home all alone. if (JACK >15) { type the date with Jack here } elif (DRAKE >15) { type the date with Drake } else { type what happens if she stayed home } Another way to do it is: if (JACK >15) { goto datewithjack } elif (DRAKE >15) { goto datewithdrake } else { goto lonelyjaz } label datewithjack label datewithdrake label lonelyjaz In both examples you have to make sure the reader can't have above 15 points for both guys. If that occurs it will mess up the branch! Alternatively you can make it so that if they don't have at least 15 points with Jack, they can go on a date with Drake. if (JACK >15) { type the date with Jack } else { type the date with drake } or if (JACK >15) { goto datewithjack } else { goto datewithdrake } label datewithjack label datewithdrake That was a quick overview of what the point system looks like.
